I am participating in the Murder Mystery Quilt (MMQ) for the 2nd year in a row. Last year's quilt and mystery, the Murder of the Viking, was solved in January and completed in December. Here's my make for 2023, which I altered to change the sail, add the flags from Sweden and Norway, and add the Runes. It is still unquilted, but the papers have been removed from the back. As part of the MMQ, there is a "Learn to Quilt" series included, so this Block of the Month (BOM) is ideal for beginners. While not a beginner, I did use Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) for the first time as part of this adventure and decided to use the technique for the entire quilt in 2023.
The MMQ opens for registration in the fall and is closed for 2024. So why am I blogging about this now? because it is so much fun, and if you join the mailing list now, you will be sure that you don't miss out when registration opens. Here's a link: Murder Mystery Quilt BOM. Please note that I am not affiliated with this website, other than participating as a member.
For 2024, our murder takes place in Greece. Each month, in addition to the block instructions, we receive a chapter of the mystery. Completing our blocks on time earns us clues. And solving the mystery gets us into a drawing for a prize at the end, with additional entries if you solve correctly before the last month. Intrigued yet? We also are subdivided into clue crews, where we meet on Facebook to share our makes and our questions. The nicest quilters on the internet, it's true.
Love quilting? Love reading? Combine them both into a yearlong adventure. Here are the blocks I've made year to date for the Murder in Greece. (Excuse the wonkiness, please. I cut the bulk of these on a wonky surface, which will be the topic of my next blog: Cutting mat woes.)
