Life's a journey, and a quilt is a good companion.

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

I recently joined an art group as part of a larger weight loss community on Facebook. Assignment one: create a piece that represents a food mantra used to quash food thoughts. It was an easy choice for me, I travel for work, I eat frequently in restaurants, and I am almost always with other people who do not have any dietary restrictions.

My food mantra is “Not my food, not my drink, keep my eyes on my own plate.” I envisioned myself holding up my hands to block my view of the food around me. To represent this in my medium (fabric) required a self-portrait with both my face and my hands.

I am using techniques for the face from a book Making Faces in Fabric. It looks sort of like me, if I had more hair and fewer wrinkles. While I have been creating this project (it's still a work in progress), I have thought about the mantra, internalized it more fully. If you have a life challenge you are dealing with, playing with fabric to represent that will focus and affirm your goals.

It’s the journey, not the destination, that matters most. Just keep moving in the right direction. Happy quilting!
